No Birth Time? How We Still Make Your Birth Chart
It's one of the questions we hear most: "I don't know my exact birth time. Can I still have a birth chart?"
Yes. Many people never had their birth time recorded, or can't ask anymore. Many more are buying a chart as a surprise and simply can't find out without giving the game away. A birth time makes a chart more precise, but it isn't essential. This guide explains what changes without one, what stays exactly the same, and how to track the time down if you'd like to try.

What a Birth Time Adds to a Chart
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. The date and place tell us where the Sun, Moon and planets were. The time tells us one more thing: how the sky was turned in relation to the horizon where you were born.
The sky appears to rotate a full circle every 24 hours, about one degree every four minutes. That rotation sets two parts of the chart:
- The Rising sign (Ascendant): the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at your birth. It changes roughly every two hours.
- The twelve houses: the chart's twelve sections, which show which areas of life each planet falls into.
These are the parts that need a birth time. Everything else is set by the date.
What Stays Exactly the Same Without a Birth Time
Without a time, your chart still shows:
- Your Sun sign: the same all day, except on the rare day the Sun changes sign.
- Mercury, Venus and Mars: these move slowly, so they rarely change sign within a single day.
- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto: the outer planets take months or years to cross a sign.
- Most of the aspects: the angles between planets, drawn as the lines across your chart.
In other words, the heart of the chart is all there.
The One to Watch: the Moon
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart. It changes sign every two to three days, so on most days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. But on the day it changes sign, the Moon sign depends on the time of birth.
So if you know even roughly when you were born ("morning", "evening"), it's worth including. On a Moon-changing day, that's often enough to settle it.
How We Make Your Chart Without a Time
When there's no birth time, Holly creates what astrologers call a noon chart: the chart is set for 12:00 midday on your date of birth, at your place of birth.
Noon is the fairest choice for an unknown time. Whatever time you were actually born, it's never more than twelve hours away, so the planets, and especially the fast-moving Moon, are placed as close as possible to where they really were.
Because the Rising sign and houses depend on the exact time, Holly leaves them out rather than guess. Your chart shows what your date and place of birth reveal: your Sun, Moon and planets in their signs, and the aspects between them. Nothing on it is guessed.
The result is still a beautiful, personal map of the sky on the day you arrived, and a talisman that is entirely yours.
How to Find Your Birth Time
If you'd like the full chart with your Rising sign, it's worth a little detective work:
- Ask family. Parents, grandparents or older siblings often remember, or have it written in a baby book.
- Check your birth certificate. In some countries the time is printed on it; in others it isn't.
- Look for hospital records. Hospital discharge notes or the birth record held by the hospital usually include the time.
- Look through keepsakes. Birth announcements, baby bracelets, cards and old letters sometimes mention it.
An approximate time ("early morning", "just after lunch") is still useful, so include it with your order.
Buying as a Gift? Keep It a Surprise
Asking someone for their birth time can give the surprise away. You have two good options:
- Order with just the date and place. The chart will be beautiful and complete in everything that matters.
- Give a gift card. An Atelier Holly gift card lets them add their own details, birth time included, whenever they're ready. It's sent instantly by email, or as a printed card in the post.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a birth chart without a birth time?
Yes. Holly sets the chart for 12:00 noon on your birth date and leaves out the Rising sign and houses, the only parts that depend on the time.
Will my chart look different without a birth time?
It will show your Sun, Moon, planets and aspects as usual, without the Rising sign and the house divisions. It's just as beautiful, and nothing on it is guessed.
Will my Sun sign be accurate without a birth time?
Yes, on all but a handful of days a year, when the Sun moves from one sign into the next. If you were born on one of those days (around the 19th–23rd of the month), an approximate time helps.
What if I only know roughly when I was born?
Include it. Even "morning" or "evening" can help settle the Moon sign on the rare days it changes.
Can a Couple's Chart be made without birth times?
Yes. A Couple's Chart works the same way: dates and places of birth for both of you are enough.
Does it work for a newborn?
Yes, and new parents usually have the time on the hospital notes. Read our guide to baby birth chart prints.
