Atelier Holly is the Stockholm studio of British contemporary artist Holly Biörklund. She takes the exact moment and place of a birth, maps the Sun, Moon and planets as they stood, and turns that sky into a work of art.

The Artist

Holly Biörklund is a British contemporary artist living and working in Stockholm.

Her practice spans original oil paintings on linen, signed limited-edition giclée prints, site-specific murals and private commissions, shown in exhibitions and painted onto walls. Across all of it she returns to the same subjects: mythology, memory, and a fine, flowing line that moves between the botanical and the figurative.

Atelier Holly brings that practice to astrology. Holly treats a birth chart the way a painter treats a portrait: a likeness of one person, at one moment, that nobody else can share.

The Birth Chart, as Art

A birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact minute and place a person is born. It shows where the Sun, the Moon and each planet stood against the twelve signs of the zodiac. Astrologers have drawn these maps for more than two thousand years. Move the minute or the city and the chart moves with it, so no two are alike.

Holly keeps the astronomy exact and gives everything else to the painting. Her originals are worked in watercolor, gouache and gold leaf on Hahnemühle German etching paper, then lettered by hand in calligraphy ink. Her Couple's Charts interlock two people's skies in a single design.

2023: Artist in residence at the Old Carpet Factory, Hydra, Greece, where she painted a mural in the studio.
