How to Read Your Birth Chart: A Beginner's Guide
A birth chart can look like a beautiful puzzle: a wheel of symbols, numbers and crossing lines. Once you know what each part means, it reads like a map, and it's simpler than it looks.
This beginner's guide to reading a birth chart walks you through it in six steps: the wheel, your Big Three, the planets, the signs, the houses and the aspects. Keep your own chart beside you as you go.

Step 1: Understand the Wheel
A birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born, drawn as a circle. It has three layers:
- The outer ring: the 12 zodiac signs. Each sign takes up a 30° slice of the circle.
- The inner ring: the 12 houses. These divide the chart into areas of life, from self and money to love and career. Houses depend on your birth time.
- The symbols inside: the planets. Each sits in a sign and a house, at the position it held when you were born.
The lines across the middle are the aspects: the angles between planets. We'll come to those in Step 6.
In most charts, the left-hand side of the wheel marks the eastern horizon at your birth. That point is your Ascendant, or Rising sign, and the houses are counted from there.
Step 2: Find Your Big Three
Start with the three placements that say the most about you:
- Your Sun sign: your core identity. Find the Sun symbol (a circle with a dot) and note the sign it sits in.
- Your Moon sign: your emotional world. Find the crescent Moon.
- Your Rising sign: how you meet the world. It's the sign on the left-hand horizon line, often marked "AC" or "ASC".

Step 3: The Planets (What)
Each planet represents a different part of you. Think of the planets as what is happening.
| Planet | Symbol | Represents |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | ☉ | Identity, purpose, vitality |
| Moon | ☽ | Emotions, instincts, what makes you feel safe |
| Mercury | ☿ | Thinking, communication, learning |
| Venus | ♀ | Love, beauty, pleasure, what you value |
| Mars | ♂ | Drive, action, courage, desire |
| Jupiter | ♃ | Growth, luck, generosity, optimism |
| Saturn | ♄ | Discipline, structure, responsibility, time |
| Uranus | ♅ | Change, originality, independence |
| Neptune | ♆ | Dreams, imagination, intuition |
| Pluto | ♇ | Transformation, power, renewal |
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the "personal" planets: they move quickly, so they describe you most individually. The outer planets move slowly and are shared by everyone born within a few years of you.
Step 4: The Signs (How)
The sign a planet sits in describes how it expresses itself. Venus in Aries loves boldly and directly; Venus in Cancer loves tenderly and protectively.
| Sign | Symbol | Approx. dates | Element | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | ♈ | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Fire | Cardinal |
| Taurus | ♉ | Apr 20 – May 20 | Earth | Fixed |
| Gemini | ♊ | May 21 – Jun 20 | Air | Mutable |
| Cancer | ♋ | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | Water | Cardinal |
| Leo | ♌ | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Fire | Fixed |
| Virgo | ♍ | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Earth | Mutable |
| Libra | ♎ | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Air | Cardinal |
| Scorpio | ♏ | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Water | Fixed |
| Sagittarius | ♐ | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Fire | Mutable |
| Capricorn | ♑ | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Earth | Cardinal |
| Aquarius | ♒ | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Air | Fixed |
| Pisces | ♓ | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Water | Mutable |
Elements describe temperament: fire is passionate, earth practical, air intellectual, water emotional. Modes describe how a sign acts: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs sustain them, mutable signs adapt. The exact dates shift by a day from year to year.
Step 5: The Houses (Where)
The house a planet falls in shows where in your life its energy plays out. House 1 starts at your Rising sign, and the houses run counterclockwise around the wheel.
| House | Area of life |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, appearance, first impressions |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, self-worth |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, everyday learning |
| 4th | Home, family, roots |
| 5th | Creativity, romance, children, play |
| 6th | Daily work, routines, health |
| 7th | Partnerships and marriage |
| 8th | Intimacy, shared resources, transformation |
| 9th | Travel, beliefs, higher learning |
| 10th | Career, reputation, public life |
| 11th | Friends, community, hopes |
| 12th | The unconscious, solitude, endings |
Houses need an accurate birth time. Without one, a chart can still show every planet in its sign; read how we make a chart without a birth time.
Step 6: The Aspects (the Lines)
The lines across the center of a chart connect planets that sit at particular angles to each other. These aspects show how different parts of you work together, or pull against each other.
| Aspect | Angle | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Two planets blend and amplify each other |
| Sextile | 60° | An easy opportunity, if you act on it |
| Square | 90° | Tension that pushes you to grow |
| Trine | 120° | A natural flow and talent |
| Opposition | 180° | A balancing act between two sides |
On an Atelier Holly chart, these lines become part of the artwork: the web of connections at the heart of the design is your own set of aspects, so the pattern is personal to you.
Putting It Together
Read each placement as a sentence: planet (what) + sign (how) + house (where). For example:
- Moon in Cancer in the 4th house: your emotions (Moon) are tender and protective (Cancer), and you feel most yourself at home with family (4th house).
- Mars in Leo in the 10th house: your drive (Mars) is bold and expressive (Leo), and it shows most in your career (10th house).
Then add the aspects: a Moon trine Venus, for example, suggests feelings and affection flow easily together. Start with your Big Three, then the personal planets, then the rest. You don't need to read it all at once.
See Your Own Chart as Art
Every Atelier Holly birth chart is made to order from your date, place and (if known) time of birth, and printed on archival Hahnemühle German Etching paper. For two people, a Couple's Chart interlocks both charts in one design.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to read my birth chart?
Your date, place and time of birth. Without a time, you can still read the planets and signs, but not the houses or Rising sign.
Where should I start?
With your Big Three: Sun, Moon and Rising. Then look at Mercury, Venus and Mars before moving on to houses and aspects.
Why don't I relate to my Sun sign?
Your Sun sign is only one part of the chart. Your Moon, Rising sign and the other planets often explain the parts of you a horoscope misses.
Is a birth chart the same as a star map?
No. A star map shows the stars visible above a place on a given night; a birth chart maps the planets in the zodiac for a person. Read what's the difference.
